Ferrari’s intimate connection to motorsport has chiefly been formed around Formula 1 and sportscar racing. But the mid-engined 308 GTB gave the Maranello marque something of an unlikely presence on the stages of the World Rally Championship. With the blessing of the factory, the renowned Michelotto concern prepared cars to comply with Group 4 regulations. Much more than just a marketing stunt, in addition to winning a variety of national titles, the car impressively claimed 2nd place overall in the Corsica round of the 1982 WRC season.

That rough-stuff success duly inspired the creation of four GTBs that were built to Group B rally specification. Three of those were based around the Quattrovalvole powerplant. Having adopted fuel injection, in addition to needing to meet strict emissions targets, the 2.9-litre V-8 suffered a drop in power. This was cured courtesy of the fitment of four valves per cylinder.

Just 748 examples of the 308 GTB Quattrovalvole would roll off the production line between 1982 and 1985. Factory data records that this car was delivered in June 1984 to Ferrari Import Epanola of Madrid, Spain. Built in left-hand-drive form, the specification was headlined by Nero paintwork to complement a Crema leather interior.

Twelve years later, the Quattrovalvole was purchased by prominent French collector, Marcel Petitjean. He kept the Ferrari for nigh on 27 years, with the consigning owner then buying the 308 GTB in February 2022. Since moving to the Middle East, this car notably retains its matching numbers engine and five-speed, open-gate, manual transmission. It presents today in red and will require recommissioning before driving following a period of static display.

Accompanied by a tool roll, jack, and spare wheel, this beautiful Pininfarina-styled 308 GTB Quattrovalvole offers a very appealing route into the classic Ferrari ownership experience.
