The final iteration of the Mercedes-Benz W113 chassis debuted in December 1967 in the form of the 280 SL. Over the years the SL had evolved from a sports car to a grand tourer, frequently equipped with the optional automatic transmission and air conditioning, especially in the U.S. market. The engine was upgraded from the 250 SL’s 2,496-cc M129II engine to a 2,778-cc M130 for the new 280 SL. The larger bore of the engine resulted in pair-cast cylinders without an intermediate water jacket, making an oil cooler necessary; this was mounted vertically beside the radiator. Each engine was bench-tested for two hours, ensuring that the full 180 hp was available.

This Mercedes-Benz 280 SL has benefitted from a restoration and is finished in a desirable shade of red, with both a soft top and color-matched ‘Pagoda’ removable hardtop. The car rides on Sumitomo HTR H4 tires with color-matched wheel covers. The 280 SL is powered by its original 2,778-cc SOHC inline six-cylinder engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection and is paired to a desirable four-speed manual transmission. Interior features include a painted dash which houses VDO instrumentation and clock, as well as a Becker Europa AM/FM radio. Additionally, the 280 SL features air conditioning, and power steering and brakes. The car is accompanied by its Mercedes-Benz Data Card.
