Obviously inspired by American automotive design, Auto Union’s 1000 SP was one of the most eye-catching and attractive cars of the post war era. Usually European automotive design influences American design, but it was the opposite in the case of Auto Union’s 1000 SP. The press named it the “baby Thunderbird” when new because of its striking resemblance to a 1957 Thunderbird. The interior of the 1000 SP was as well finished as the bodies made by coachbuilder Baur of Stuttgart. The interior was luxurious with chrome accents, a large plastic steering wheel, full carpeting, and adjustable front seats. Due to its many fine details throughout, the 1000 SP was not a cheap car to produce and it is rare both in the US and in Europe as a result.
This 1000 SP Coupe is a solid, long time California car that has an older restoration. The last three owners of this car are reported to be DKW/ Arcane Motor club members. Marque specialist Jan Ojala rebuilt the two-stroke engine less than 100 miles ago and it has a new starter motor. This is an attractive, rare, and fun automobile that would be a complimentary addition to any collection.
