It is hard to imagine a classical pianist becoming one of the highest-paid entertainers in the United States, but in his 1970s heyday, Liberace was exactly that, earning some $300,000 a week. “Mr. Showmanship” lived up to his name, playing ornately decorated pianos while wearing flamboyant stage outfits and jewelry, and was known for, quite literally, putting on a show, to the delight of his fans.
Part of Liberace’s larger-than-life existence was a fondness for extravagant motor cars. Among them was this Zimmer Golden Spirit, at one point mentioned in his press materials as having been “formerly owned by Burt Reynolds.” No one knows whether that was true; Liberace, like Carroll Shelby, was fond of telling “stretchers.”
Following the performer’s passing in 1987, the Zimmer, described as “his favorite car” with about 8,000 miles on the odometer, was sold at his estate auction to the Imperial Palace of Las Vegas. Decorated in its former owner’s typical fashion with his signature candelabra as its hood ornament (yes, it lights up), matching “sconces” on the fenders and rear quarters, Liberace’s signature on the faux “sidemount” covers and wind wings, and other appropriate touches, it remained a visitor favorite in the Imperial Palace Auto Collection for many years. In 1993, it was featured in a Top Gear segment, alongside an appropriately overdressed Jeremy Clarkson.
The Zimmer was purchased for The Boeckmann Collection in 2013 as one of its earliest acquisitions. Displayed in the collection for 13 years, the car has occasionally ventured out for display, including at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and for a memorable feature in the former CNBC series, Jay Leno’s Garage. It also appeared in the Discovery TV show Car Kings.
Now with 10,837 miles at the time of cataloguing, it awaits its next home with anyone who appreciates unusual, exotic automobiles, or one of the 20th century’s most iconic American entertainers.
