Oil on board, c.1980, framed. Approx: 16 x 8 inches. Use Safety Glasses appears to be, and is widely regarded to be a social commentary on gun safety. Painted in a palette of blues the viewer is placed behind the bullet cylinder staring down the barrel of a gun. Through a crosshair scope at the front of the gun one sees a bright red apple, what one would assume to be the target. Painted in the later years of his life the piece shows a continued refinement in Dutchs primitive paint handling. The painting can be seen as a commentary on personal and or governmental safety. As with the childs cradle/chair he created, the painting makes light of the ever-growing governmental restrictions and his opinion of them. The painting is also reflective of Dutchs use of symbolism and humor in his works as the apple undoubtedly reminds the viewer of William Tell who placed an apple upon his sons head to shoot with an arrow. Unfortunately for Tell he missed and hit his son. Thus with the apple Dutch reminds us that human stupidity is often the most dangerous thing of all. The viewers take on this painting can lead off in numerous directions, however the overall presentation of the artwork is impressive and the palette of colors are thoughtful and serene; while one of his smaller pieces it is entirely unique within itself, from his other original artwork, especially in its depiction of firearms.
