The 1955 DeSoto was longer, wider and sleeker than any previously seen. The line was designed with a youthful verve and spirit with its graceful exterior contours in bright colors. The DeSoto was equally new on the inside. The PowerFlite automatic transmission was operated by an intriguing Flite-Control lever mounted on the dashboard. The dashboard was dramatically styled with a dual-cockpit theme. Glistening modern hardware was fashioned to enhance the overall styling theme.
Even the view out was improved with DeSoto's first “Horizon” wrap-around windshield. Riding in a '55 DeSoto was an experience. The engine was whisper quiet and the ride spectacularly smooth. The car is barely five-feet high and is exceedingly long and beautiful.
The Fireflite being offered is reported to be an unrestored original example. It is powered by its 291-cid, 200-hp Fireflite V-8 Hemi engine that is connected to a PowerFlite automatic transmission that is operated via the dash-mounted Flite-Control lever to the right of the steering wheel. The two-tone colors of Emberglow and Onyx are striking and are complimented by a similarly themed interior. The car is enhanced by power windows, steering and brakes; plus a radio and dash-mounted clock.
The brightwork is distinctive, beautiful and seen in abundance – quite fitting for this era. Dual mirrors, elegant badging and chrome wire wheels with wide whitewall tires complete the elegant, yet sporty package.
