The generation of Porsche 911 produced from late 1993 through early 1998, known to insiders and enthusiasts as the type 993, is immortalized for being the final evolution of the hallowed sports car featuring an air-cooled engine—a critical distinction to hardline Porsche purists. Not only did the 993 mark the end of a legacy that started with the progenitor Porsche 356, it would also prove to be the last of the hand-built 911s.
As soon as the voluptuous type 993 Carrera was introduced, people were clamoring to see what a Turbo version would look like. The anticipation would persist until 1995, when the new 911 Turbo was unveiled for the 1996 model year. Dressing up the already handsome 993 with the Turbo’s wider bodywork was a proven formula for success. One of the most impressive visual cues is the car’s imposing presence from the rear view, with its back fenders widened by approximately 1.25 inches. The front was extended downward, allowing space for three large air intakes to improve aerodynamics. The new “tea tray” type rear spoiler had an almost integral, wrap-around look that appeared to melt over the car. Further contrasting with the previous 911 Turbo’s tacked-on “whale tail” spoiler, the new aero device was also lighter and body-colored.
The Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe offered here was first sold to an individual in the state of Wisconsin. The Porsche remained in the Midwest during the handful of years after the initial purchase, but after a new owner acquired the car in 1999, it traveled to California and remained over the next two decades under the guardianship of several more caretakers. While under the care of The Boeckmann Collection, the 911’s engine was completely rebuilt by Porsche Santa Clarita.
Finished in the classic exterior color Guards Red, the interior is luxuriously upholstered in supple Cashmere leather, while the dashboard is swathed in contrasting black hides. This Turbo further features an array of factory options including the digital sound package, a six-disc CD changer, heated front seats, lumbar support, and rim caps with the Porsche crest. Now showing 76,805 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloguing, the 911 Turbo has been lightly modified with an aftermarket exhaust and a front strut brace. Inside, the steering wheel was swapped for a unit sourced from a type 996 911, while the dashboard features a Porsche GPS head unit.
As the final, ultimate development of the air-cooled 911, the 993 Turbo occupies a significant place in the history of the storied Stuttgart-based automaker. With classic color scheme and a well-appointed interior, this example presents a unique opportunity for anyone looking to experience the ultimate air-cooled Porsche of the 1990s.
