With its eye-catching double-humped fibreglass tonneau cover and dramatically lowered windscreen, the one-year-only 1989 Porsche Speedster is instantly recognisable to Porsche enthusiasts. Designed as a lightweight, racy homage to its 356 ancestor, the Speedster was reintroduced following a 35-year absence, with most examples of the highly desirable two-seat variant quietly disappearing into private collections. The Speedster nameplate was revived for the final year of the G-bodied Carrera 3.2, with a limited run of two-seat Speedsters built from January to August of 1989.
Leaving Porsche’s Stuttgart factory on 13 June 1989, this 911 Speedster was finished in triple Black, with a matching colourway for its exterior, interior, and soft-top roof. Importantly, the car was built to the “Werks Turbo Look” (WTL) body style and was one of only 823 such examples delivered new to the United States. Here, it was delivered new to the late Don Simpson, producer of blockbuster films including Beverley Hills Cop, Top Gun, Bad Boys, and more. Around the time of Simpson’s death in 1996, the Porsche was acquired by prominent spy author H Keith Melton and stayed in Florida until it was exported in 2013, at which point it is believed to have joined a Porsche collection in the Netherlands. Sold at auction in Paris in February 2017, the 911 Speedster since found ownership in Austria.
