The Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, introduced for 1957, was a monumental achievement from an automaker at the height of its power. Packed with an impressive array of luxury and technology features, it boasted cutting-edge styling, highlighted by Cadillac-first quad headlamp design and a brushed stainless steel roof. For 1958, the final year of this body style’s two-year production run, the model’s Brougham-specific 365-cubic-inch V-8 was upgraded by switching to a trio of two-barrel carburetors, resulting in an improved output of 335-horsepower—more than enough to effortlessly move this imposing automobile with haste.
The Eldorado Brougham’s cost was a staggering $13,074 when new; even then, Cadillac is said to have lost as much as $10,000 on each car sold. That was of little concern, however, as the exclusive model unquestionably confirmed Cadillac’s slogan and standing as the “Standard of the World.” Only 400 Eldorado Broughams were sold in 1957, and even fewer, a mere 304, were sold in 1958.
The 1958 model offered here is believed to have been preserved in highly original condition in the years following its delivery to Minnesota. However, its current presentation is the result of a cosmetic recommissioning under previous ownership. This involved stripping the exterior down to bare metal and applying a fresh coat of the paint color it featured from the factory, Lake Placid Blue, which wonderfully matches the Medium Blue Bayou leather upholstery in the cabin. A rare combination, the Cadillac Database records just two Broughams finished in this color scheme. Mechanically, the suspension has been swapped over to coil springs in place of the typically troublesome factory air suspension.
The car is supplied with what is believed to be a complete collection of the Brougham vanity kit, including six magnetized cocktail tumblers, an Evans vanity case with additional accessories, a plastic cigarette box, two packaged refills of Arpage by Lanvin, the gold atomizer, a sealed bottle exclusive to the Broughams, and a note pad with Cross silver pencil. A copy of the original build information from Cadillac, a 1958 “skier” Colorado plate, reprinted owner’s manual, a three-ring binder of maintenance records, and restoration photographs accompany the car as well. Under current ownership, the car has benefitted from a professional paint correction and the dashboard being restored.
Few cars built in America, or indeed anywhere in the world at the time, were as stylistically audacious or technologically advanced as the 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. Presented in a desirable and rare color combination and presenting in excellent condition, this superb example offers its next owner the opportunity to truly experience the “Standard of the World” firsthand.
