Released in 1971, the type R107 chassis Mercedes-Benz has endured as a status symbol for over 40 years. Richly featured, impeccably well-built, and powerful, this third generation of the Super Leicht class further developed the luxury tourer concept atop the foundations laid by the previous code W113 chassis. Produced for just shy of 20 model years, the R107 starred in films—and completed overland endurance rallies in some of the harshest environments the planet has to offer. This duality further cemented Mercedes-Benz’s status as one of the foremost manufacturers of wonderfully engineered automobiles. Beloved by millions, the third-generation of the SL roadster stands as one of the true greats.

This Smoke Silver Metallic over Palomino example offered here was completed in November 1986 for delivery to California. Presented today with fewer than 17,250 miles at time of cataloguing, original factory specifications of this remarkably preserved 560 SL include a dark brown soft top, folding armrest, heated mirrors, antenna, rear spoiler delete, matching hard top, and Becker Grand Prix radio. The car’s correct chrome alloy wheels are presently shod in a set of Pirelli P6 tires.

Records indicate that this 560 SL remained in California until 2009, and it was later acquired by the consignor in 2015. While within their collection, it has been carefully maintained and only sparingly enjoyed on fine-weather occasions. In October 2021, it was lavished with over $4,100 of refurbishment to its air conditioning and fuel systems by Stinehardt Imports of Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Having already achieved status as a modern collectable, the 560 SL is undoubtedly the most desirable variant of Mercedes-Benz’s R107 platform. Low-mileage examples are naturally becoming increasingly difficult to find. As a result, this striking example warrants serious consideration and would sit proudly in any collection of Mercedes-Benz convertibles.
