Introduced in 1959, the successful Austin-Healey 3000 underwent a steady series of upgrades before production ceased in 1967. Mark III BJ8 cars, such as this beautiful 1965 example, are among the most desirable of all the so-called “Big Healeys”: Incorporating all production improvements—including the 150-horsepower engine, power brakes, and a softer trailing-arm rear suspension—they maintained the style and excitement that made the 3000 into an enduring sports car icon.

Completed in late December 1964, this car was dispatched to a dealer in New York in February 1965; it was originally finished in Healey Blue over blue. While it is a Phase II BJ8 example, it displays the attractive single turn indicators characteristic of earlier cars (as is correct for this chassis number range).

In 2014, the car was brilliantly restored by Healey specialist Knut Holzer of British Motor Corporation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at a cost of $82,000. It was totally stripped and refinished in its present Irish Mist Green; this is complimented by a Parchment interior with green piping, as well as a new green mohair top and boot. New carpeting and a Moto-Lita steering wheel round out the cabin, and new or re-dipped chrome and new wire wheels complete the exterior.

The car’s numbers-matching 3.0-liter inline-six engine and carburetors were rebuilt, and its electrical system was totally overhauled, including a new wiring harness. Performance enhancements include a Mallory distributor, larger radiator, and upgraded cooling fans. Further, its transmission was upgraded to a Toyota-sourced five-speed manual (the rebuilt factory gearbox is included with the sale).

With its odometer indicating approximately 1,550 miles at time of cataloguing—believed to reflect mileage accrued since restoration—and accompanied by a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, spare, tools, and its factory gearbox, this 1965 Austin-Healey 3000 is an opportunity to enjoy British motoring at its finest.
