When developing the 400 GT, Lamborghini carried over the best elements of the 350 GT, making minor tweaks to maintain its advantage over its peers. It used the same the body shape, sculpted by Touring of Milan, and Dallara-designed superleggera construction. Under the bonnet remained the wondrous Bizzarrini quad-cam V-12, fettled to 3.9-liters to produce 320 horsepower—a bump of 50 horsepower over its predecessor.

To achieve the model’s new 2+2 layout, the roofline and boot lid were altered to create extra headroom for the rear seats. The gearbox was also updated to an all-synchromesh Lamborghini design, further improving a driving experience that had already been heralded by Car and Driver magazine as “much less demanding than a Ferrari, and what's more, it seems to steer, stop, go and corner just about as well as our last Ferrari.”

This 400 GT is reportedly the 70th example produced between 1966 and 1968. Delivered new to its first owner in England wearing Azzurro paintwork, it was acquired by a resident of Garrison, New York in 1974, with whom it remained until 1996. Purchased by Lamborghini of Orlando, chassis 0745 was treated to a nut-and-bolt restoration executed in 2009, greatly improving the car’s presentation in shows and concours. The consignor acquired this 400 GT in 2012.

In 2016, the consignor elected to prepare this attractive 400 GT for optimal touring performance; accompanying invoices on file illustrate nearly six figures spent in pursuit of that goal. The work on file was completed by High Mountain Classics of Greeley, Colorado, with additional tasks sublet to several other specialists; this involved the sourcing of a NOS engine block, as the original was determined to be damaged following a teardown. No component of the 3.9-liter powerplant was overlooked during the build. New parts were furnished as needed, and many ancillary components were rebuilt, including the water pump, fuel pump, distributors, and Weber carburetors.

Meanwhile, the chassis received overhauls of its front brakes, brake booster, fuse box, and speedometer; a new clutch kit was also fitted in February of 2018. 0745’s original engine block was repaired in August 2019 and is included with the sale. The car presently rides on a set of bespoke period-style tires and desirable magnesium Borrani wire wheels befitting a factory-correct aesthetic.

This meticulously restored 400 GT 2+2 is accompanied by its manuals, carburetor tuning guide, invoices, and a photo album documenting its restoration. With a short three-year production run and some 247 examples produced, an opportunity to acquire a 400 GT 2+2 in such superb mechanical condition is not to be taken lightly. Prepared with touring in mind, 0745 would be a worthy competitor in the world’s finest historic rallies.
