This 1964 356 SC coupe is offered from the estate of the late Richard Q. King, a Porsche enthusiast and collector in Ohio. According to its Kardex, a copy of which is supplied with the car, this Karmann-bodied SC was completed 5 March 1964 and shipped to “VW Distributors, Dublin” (almost certainly indicating Dublin, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus). Other notations on the Kardex reveal that it left the factory wearing 6407 Signal Red with a Black leatherette interior. Factory-installed options included a set of chromed steel wheels fitted with Dunlop 165-15 radial tires, and a Blaupunkt “Frankfurt” Deluxe radio with two speakers and an antenna. Its subsequent ownership history is unknown prior to being acquired by Mr. King.

At some point in its life, this car’s original Type 616/15 75-horsepower engine was replaced with a 60-horsepower “Normal” 1600 originally installed in a late 1961 356 B. It is presently fitted with Dell’Orto carburetors topped with Dell’Orto air cleaners. It retains its numbers-matching gearbox per the accompanying Kardex copy. The car was resprayed black by a previous owner and the chrome rims replaced with 911-style wheels of Fuchs design.

After emerging from long-term storage in Ohio, it was examined by a professional appraiser, whose May 2021 report (available on file) noted some surface rust and some rot in the rear inner fenders but found the front pan and battery box in good condition. Door alignment was described as good, but some exterior trim items need attention. The original front seats have been replaced with fabric-covered aftermarket items. The original radio has been removed, but was retained, and accompanies the car. This SC’s odometer read 52,958 miles at the time of cataloguing, but its total mileage is unknown.

Disc-braked 356 C models are widely considered the best-driving of the series, and this 356 SC Coupe should be considered as a viable candidate for restoration as a weekend, club-level driver.
