Ford first introduced the Mustang Mach 1 in 1969 as the replacement for the “GT” designation which signified higher performance offerings since the model’s introduction in 1965. The Mach 1 was Ford’s mainstream performance car and it solidified the company’s position as the preeminent manufacturer of American muscle cars. Ford effectively packed the Mach 1 with the perfect combination of power, looks, and personality, making it equally as desirable today as it was when it was first introduced.
The Mach 1 offered here is an exceptional example with only 23,029 miles on the odometer. Surely one of the lowest original mileage Mach 1s available. It is, with the exception of the proper replacement of maintenance parts and the addition of an FM radio, exactly as it left the factory nearly 50 years ago. It is still equipped with its original engine, the optional uprated 351 Windsor engine which puts out nearly 300 horsepower. Of note is that the car’s identification number is also stamped on the engine block, a rarely seen factory touch. The rest of the driveline, including the automatic transmission and rear axle, also remains original.
The car still wears its factory original paint and black vinyl interior, both of which remain in exceptional condition. Of special interest to Mustang aficionados is the presence of the original ink stripe around the iconic flat black hood. It is said that this stripe is impossible to accurately replicate today without having access to an original factory striping wheel and the ink-like material with which it was originally done.
Always properly stored and frequently enjoyed by the consignor, this Mustang Mach 1 is a truly special and highly important example. It is without question the benchmark, the target for Mach 1 restorations should aim. For those in the know, it is clear that this impressively preserved time capsule will be the centerpiece in the finest of Mustang collections. Included with the sale is the Marti Report, a selection of historic documents which support the original mileage, an original owner’s manual, and jack.
