It is reported that in 1978, there were just 1,200 special edition Black Knight El Caminos made; production stopped in June due to a lawsuit, which forced the package to be renamed the Royal Knight (like this vehicle) for 1979. So popular was the special edition that in period, car dealers would clone other super sport models to mimic the Black (Royal) Knights. The Royal Knight was produced in the regular El Camino line up until 1980; afterwards, it became a special order, until 1983, when it was discontinued.
