Chevrolet introduced the mid-size or intermediate Chevelle in 1964 to fit between the full-sized Chevy and the compact Chevy II. Chevrolet’s popular A-body received updated sheetmetal for 1966. Body lines were more curvaceous than previous models and it shared the tunneled rear window design and coke-bottle contours shared with all GM intermediates. The Super Sport became a separate series in 1966 distinguished by SS badging and the two distinctive side-facing hood vents and ads told us that “SS doesn’t stand for ‘Standing Still.’” The Super Sport based offered upgrades such as all-vinyl bucket seats, console, special instrumentation, SS trim and wheel covers, and the powerful 396-cid “big block” V-8.

The 1967 received a moderate facelift with new front fenders, hood with twin chromed blisters, and rear treatment. Despite the stiff competition from competitive makes both within and outside General Motors, Chevrolet sold 63,006 SS396 Chevelle coupes and convertibles.

This triple black beauty is heavily optioned and features the L34 350-hp, 396-cid V-8 and four-speed manual transmission with actual miles. Options include factory air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, AM-radio, tilt-steering column, and vinyl roof. In addition, it is fitted with Firestone red line bias ply tires on 15” American Racing wheels. Subject to a full rotisserie restoration, the chassis was properly painted with red oxide primer along with the proper hoses, clamps and factory markings under hood.
