In 1969, the Ford Torino-based Talledegas won 26 Grand National races and took the NASCAR manufacturers championship. For 1970, Ford upped the ante and introduced a completely new and more aerodynamic Torino body design, featuring more dramatic long hood / short deck styling. It was longer, lower and wider than the 1969 model and the roofline was also lower and less formal than before. The windshield rake was increased, and the SportsRoof models had an even flatter fastback roofline.

The Torino Cobra was the no-nonsense, pure performance model, showcasing the top level Ford performance components in a more basic level of trim than the Torino GT. The Cobra was only available as a SportsRoof model, and came standard with a four-speed close ratio transmission, Hurst shifter, competition suspension, flat black hood and grille, seven-inch wide wheels, F70-14 tires with raised white letters, twist-style exposed hood latches and Cobra emblems. New options included 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels with F60-15 tires. Performance was remarkable with the new 429-cid, 375-hp V-8 engine, even though the Torino was heavier for 1970. Motor Trend tested a 1970 Torino Cobra with a 429 SCJ, four-speed and 3.91:1 gears, and turned a 5.8 second 0- to 60-mph time, with a 13.99 second quarter-mile at 101.0-mph.

Purchased from a private Denver-based collection, this rare J-code 429 Ram Air is equipped with the four-speed transmission with Hurst shifter and is said to be correct throughout, including the original carburetor and manifolds. It is reported to be presented in an unrestored state, except for a beautiful repaint of the Bright Yellow finish on a near-perfect body. The black bucket seats with center console interior is said to be in original condition. The car is described as a “survivor” and also as running with its correct drivetrain. A recent rebuild has been executed to freshen up an already very strong 429 Cobra Jet engine. This is a correct J-code car that comes with a Deluxe Marti Report.

The Marti Report shows this car went to Fuquay Motor Company, Inc. in Fuquay Springs, North Carolina. It was produced one day behind schedule on November 26, 1969 and came from the Atlanta Ford factory with the already listed equipment plus Traction-Lok differential with 3.00:1 gearing, power front disc brakes, AM radio, dual rear seat speakers, color-keyed racing mirrors; Magnum 500 wheels are the perfect accent with BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised white-letter tires. This Torino Cobra 429 CJ SportsRoof is a beautiful blend of glamour and go.
