1968 was the first year that Plymouth offered the Road Runner as a performance option. Even though the GTX was already being produced, they wanted to go back to the drawing board to create a new musclecar to prowl and dominate this niche market. The standard engine was the 383-cid V-8, however for an extra seven-hundred dollars you could have the 426-cid V-8 Street Hemi rated at 425-hp with dual four-barrel carburetors. This gave the Road Runner the capability to run a quarter-mile in 13-seconds, a streetlight race winner by all means. Only 1,019 examples were built with the Street Hemi engine.
