Chassis no. 22395819

318-cid, 290-hp, OHV V-8 engine, three-speed Torqueflite transmission, torsion bar independent front suspension, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel power hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 118-inches

After Chrysler Corporation introduced Virgil Exner’s “Forward Look” for 1955, it was hard to imagine how the formerly conservative company would top it. Two years later, all was revealed. The dramatic new tailfin styling had jumped, by Chrysler’s account, a full three years: suddenly, according to the ads, it was 1960.

There were changes under the skin, tool. A new front suspension featured torsion bars, and a three-speed version of the excellent Powerflite automatic transmission, called “Torqueflite,” became available on V-8s.

This top-line Belvedere convertible is well equipped, sporting power steering, power brakes, transistor radio with dual rear-mounted antennas, heater, and whitewall tires on chrome wire wheels. It also has the rare dealer-installed power package, which comprised a dual-quad intake manifold with carburetors, linkage, and air cleaners.

A professional frame-off restoration, the car has excellent contours, and very good paint and brightwork. The top is white vinyl, with a red boot matching the exterior paint. Upholstery is red vinyl with patterned cloth inserts. The engine room and undercarriage are very clean.

Once on the road however, the ’57s were prone to body rust, so not many survived, making this car a rare and delightful find, particularly with its optional equipment. The 1957 Plymouth looked three years ahead when it was new. This one still looks modern today.
