With 562 pounds-feet of factory-rated torque on tap, and available simply by checking a box at any local Chevrolet dealer, the Callaway Twin-Turbo Corvette is one of the most audacious performance offerings of the 1980s. Built under the auspices of Chevrolet’s official RPO, or Regular Production Option program, this factory-sanctioned Callaway conversion elevated the C4 Corvette into supercar territory and created one of the most powerful and exclusive cars of its era.
When a customer selected the $26,995 option, a stock Corvette was pulled from the Bowling Green, Kentucky production line and shipped to Callaway’s Old Lyme, Connecticut facility where technicians stripped the engine down to a bare block and reassembled it with a laundry list of high-performance internals led by a pair of Garret turbochargers. Once complete, Callaway transformed the stock C4 Corvette into a true high-performance marvel. Factory rated at 382 horsepower with a staggering 562 pounds-feet of torque, it offered explosive acceleration, reaching 60 mph from a standstill in just over 5.0 seconds with a top speed exceeding 180 mph. Callaway’s bespoke touches extended to the cooling systems, engine management, and drivability, ensuring the car remained as composed as it was quick.
According to an accompanying Callaway Cars Certificate of Authenticity, the example offered here was delivered new on 1 July 1989 to the Libby-Owens-Ford Company of Toledo, Ohio, a well-known automotive windshield manufacturer. The car was reportedly used as a demonstration vehicle for one of the company’s experimental windshields before being sold to a company executive. Inherently rare, the car is said to be one of approximately 69 Callaway Corvettes built in total for 1989, with only about 25 of those being convertibles.
Finished in the classic Corvette livery of white over red leather, the car also features a factory Callaway AeroBody kit, signature 17-inch Dymag magnesium wheels, automatic climate control, and a Delco/Bose cassette stereo system. Displaying 16,188 miles at cataloguing time, the Twin Turbo Corvette is accompanied by manuals and a color-matched hardtop.
Callaway Corvettes are not only the highwater mark of C4 performance, but a fascinating chapter in the model's history as a highly unusual, factory-sanctioned modification program blending OEM design and engineering with bespoke craftsmanship. Well-documented and exceedingly rare, this Callaway Twin Turbo Convertible stands as a true cult classic—bold, fast, and emblematic of a brief, yet brilliant era.
