In 1939 Rolls-Royce built a prototype based on the Bentley Mark V that was clothed by Vanvooren. The car was dubbed the Corniche, a French word for cliff-faced coastal roads. Thirty-two years later the marque resuscitated the Corniche name for a further development of the Mulliner Park Ward two-door version of the Silver Shadow model. Available in both coupe and convertible configurations and equipped with a 6.75-liter V-8, the Corniche evolved though four iterations through 1995.
Introduced at the 1992 North American International Auto Show, the Corniche IV was mechanically updated with a four-speed automatic transmission and a new adaptive suspension. The folding-top mechanism was improved, and the top, itself, now featured a plate glass window rather than plastic. Approximately 219 examples were built over three years, adding rarity to the model’s enviable list of desirable qualities.
As confirmed by the original owner’s manual and factory data plate, this fetching Corniche was built in July 1992, and finished in unusual Balmoral Green over an interior trimmed in beige hides with spruce piping. Originally retailed through Braman Motorcars of West Palm Beach, Florida, the Rolls-Royce benefits from fastidious care and gentle use over its lifetime, as evidenced by the remarkable quality of the paint and interior, and a modest odometer reading of 20,160 miles. Believed to be largely original throughout, the Corniche displays good condition to the leather interior and carpets, and the paint shows remarkably well.
According to the consignor, the electronic amenities all continue to function properly, including the power windows, power seats, and air conditioning, and the car performs mechanically well, remaining a delight to drive. Featuring a rare factory color, and documented with a CARFAX report and owner’s manuals, this Corniche is a desirable example of the most developed iteration of the famed model.
