This “Tulipwood” Torpedo, due to its unique, lightweight construction and potent, smooth powerplant, stands for the Hispano-Suiza brand as a whole. Conceived by aperitif heir André Dubonnet, who had served in WWI as a fighter pilot, the wooden body and straight-six engine of this H6C were directly related to advanced airplane construction in the period. Built by French aircraft manufacturer Nieuport-Astra, Dubonnet’s Hispano-Suiza finished an astounding fifth place after the final lap of the Targa Florio in 1924. As one of the stars of RM Sotheby’s record-breaking Monterey 2022 sale, this one-of-a-kind Hispano-Suiza hammered at $9,245,000 USD, a record for the marque at public auction.
