Following Mercedes-Benz’s exit from the racing scene at the end of the 1955 season, the German powerhouse would not make another officially-backed appearance until the introduction of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) series in 1984. Its staggering success in the series, in tandem with its excellently engineered 190 Evolution, left Mercedes-Benz hungry for a new outlet for their racing prowess as the dream of DTM came to a close. Enter the FIA’s new GT Championship series with an opportunity to return to a competition at the international level. Not only did the marque return to a top tier of racing, they did it successfully, in partnership with AMG with the Mercedes-AMG CLK GTR GT1. They’d go on to win the 1997 and 1998 World Championships, and the rest of the Mercedes racing legacy—is history.
