The range of buses, trucks, flatbeds, and vans known as the “T2” or "Düsseldorf Transporter" served working people across the globe over three decades of production. These vehicles were the second generation of the post-war Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle and retained a similar layout to its predecessor. This cab-over-engine design offered tight packaging and housed a variety of diesel and petrol-powered engines. Thanks to its immense utility and range of body styles, the “T2” was a common sight wherever there was work to be done or people to move. Its purposeful design was distinctly Mercedes-Benz, and its large windows provided incredible visibility whether navigating tight city streets or taking in Alpine vistas.

The bus on offer, a 1973 Mercedes-Benz L 408, is a well-presented example of the Stuttgart firm’s second-generation bus. Fashioned for continental touring, the interior features well-padded seating for 14 passengers surrounded by extra-large windows and two pop-up sky lights for incredible 360-degree visibility. In addition, interior luggage racks ensure occupants have space and close access to their belongings. For larger items, the bus is accompanied by a matching trailer with three-sided access panels.

The sleek coachwork by Ernst Auwärter provides this vehicle with a clean and purposeful look. The two-tone exterior paint scheme consists of light green base and a dark green accent. Under the bonnet, a Type OM 314 diesel inline four-cylinder engine displaces 3.8 litres and provides 85 horsepower to the rear axle. The bus is documented by a collection of invoices and photos that chart restoration work completed between 2015 and 2020. Due to the rarity of replacement parts, many components were painstakingly restored by marque specialists.

Certainly a unique addition to any collection, this Mercedes-Benz L 408 bus is a wonderful vehicle to tour long distances with a group of friends.
