Much like its 300 SL bigger brother, the 190 SL was the brainchild of Mercedes-Benz American importer Max Hoffman. Hoffman believed that a smaller, less costly roadster bearing a family resemblance to the more exotic 300 SL would prove to be just as successful. Given the car’s popularity upon debuting at the 1954 New York Auto Show and subsequent success throughout its nine-year production run, Hoffman was right.

At its heart was a 1.9-liter inline-four-cylinder engine with dual Solex carburetors rated to produce 120 horsepower and good for a reported top speed of over 105 mph. The 190 SL was an effortless cruiser, and its trunk could easily accommodate a weekend’s worth of luggage for two. Priced at $3,840 when new, it cost nearly half as much as a 300 SL Roadster.

This 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is a wonderfully restored example finished in the factory-delivered colors Graphite Grey with a red vinyl interior. The roadster is made more practical with the addition of a rare and desirable “kinder seat” on the rear parcel shelf, providing anyone of diminutive stature space to ride along. Additionally, the factory-delivered hard top, restored to the same standards as the rest of the car, will accompany the 190 SL.

Acquired by the current owner in 2015, diligent maintenance has been performed in order to keep the Mercedes-Benz in proper functioning order. Soon after purchase, the brake booster and master cylinder were rebuilt along with a seatbelt installation. In spring 2023, the carburetors were rebuilt along with the fuel pump. Furthermore, the front wheel cylinders were replaced, new radiator main hoses were installed, and a new windshield washer bag was fitted. Lastly, an oil and filter change were performed within the last 60 miles of usage. Under the current period of ownership, the car has retained its excellent condition thanks to being garage-stored and covered.

A well-cared-for and concours-quality Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, this timelessly attractive roadster will make a wonderful addition to any garage.
