  • Offered from A Private Collection
  • Highly desirable, more powerful European version in the ideal color scheme; one of only 1,799 examples produced in this specification
  • Very nicely preserved; indicates just 29,940 km (~18,603 miles) at cataloguing time
  • Generously specified with extended black buffalo leather upholstery, limited-slip differential, headlight cleaning system, park distance control, electric sunroof, automatic climate control, and pass-through rear seat

BMW’s E36-generation M3 took a leap forward in terms of performance, technology, and exclusivity with the arrival of the decisively special Evolution variant for the 1996 model year. US buyers received a relatively toned-down version of the new model, which in its purest Euro-market form (as offered here) was a truly enthralling enthusiasts’ car.

The headline improvement for these examples came in the form of an increased displacement of 3.2 liters from the new “S50 B32” straight-six-cylinder engine, which retained BMW M’s signature Double VANOS continuously variable valve timing system gleaned from the McLaren F1. An increased compression ratio of 11.3:1, coupled with lightweight pistons, graphite-coated con-rods, an improved dual-mass flywheel, twin pick-up sump, and a new exhaust manifold further ensured the performance superiority of these Euro-market M3 Evolutions and their exclusive, 317-horsepower engine. Displacement and Double VANOS aside, the M3 Evolution’s real party trick is a six-speed manual transmission that routes power to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential borrowed from the contemporary 394-horsepower M5 sedan.

Finished in the exclusive shade of Estoril Blue Metallic over a luxurious cabin trimmed in extended black buffalo leather upholstery, this M3 Evolution Coupe was delivered new to Valencia, Spain in June 1997. Further to its exclusive and highly desirable facelift configuration (with revised kidney grilles and spoiler-integrated third brake light), its generous suite of optional equipment includes heated seats, the headlight cleaning system, rear sunblind, park distance control, electric sunroof, automatic climate control, front power windows, and pass-through rear seat.

Following many years of regular servicing and careful enjoyment, this prized M3 Evolution Coupe was purchased by the consignor in December 2022 and moved to their exceptional, Munich-based BMW collection. Rarely enjoyed but always admired while within the consignor’s care, today this stunning M3 Evolution is presented with fewer than 29,940 kilometers (~18,603 miles) at cataloguing time.

According to unofficial production figures, BMW reportedly produced just 1,799 left-hand drive Evolution Coupes in this color for European customers in 1997; surely very few of them have been so nicely preserved as this one. A stellar example of one of the most desirable variants of E36-generation M3, this Euro-market 3.2-liter facelift example is also well-specified, has the ideal body style finished in the model’s signature color combination, and further benefits from a life of careful use and notably low mileage. Quite simply, it checks all the right boxes for the true BMW enthusiast.
