Launched in 1998 as the last and most expensive iteration of the well-regarded Turbo R line, the Turbo RT Mulliner was available only via special order, built to individual specification and outfitted with the very best Bentley offered. These cars were identifiable by more aerodynamic and prominent bumpers, vented bodywork, flared wheel arches, and larger 18-inch alloy wheels clad in lower-profile tires. Under the hood, a revised turbocharger, a remapped Zytek engine management system, and a freer-flowing intake brought total claimed output of the 6.75-liter V-8 engine to 420 horsepower and 634 pound-feet of torque. Despite the car’s considerable size and mass, performance was impressive, with the kind of effortless acceleration Bentley is famous for.
Among the rarest Bentleys of its generation, only 56 Turbo RT Mulliner examples were produced, all but one of which are believed to be 1998 models. Based on its chassis number, the example offered here appears to be the sole 1999 model produced and is said to be one of only 39 Turbo RT Mulliners built to left-hand-drive specification.
Finished in the uncommon combination of triple black—including the exterior, leather, and carpets—the original owner ordered this Turbo RT Mulliner around the summer of 1998. By November of that year, the car was completed and subsequently dispatched to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After paying a sum of $227,962.50, the owner finally took delivery on 14 January 1999 from Bentley/Rolls-Royce dealer Lauderdale Imports Ltd., where the car was routinely serviced thereafter.
The original owner would hold onto the Turbo RT Mulliner until at least 2015, when in January of that year he would have the brakes and suspension system professionally refurbished in Boca Raton, Florida, with logged mileage of 5,579 miles. Shortly thereafter it would be sold to its next owner in California before being acquired by the consignor in 2016, who had it imported to Switzerland and then Kuwait.
Showing a mere 5,662 miles on the odometer at cataloguing time, the car has been sparingly driven its entire life. A copy of the original window sticker shows the car to have been uniquely specified with a leather-covered shift knob, matrix grille, marque emblems in the waistrails, and wing vents.
Exquisite brightwork and burled wood typical of Bentley’s unparalleled craftsmanship are on full display inside, with impressive detailing particularly evident on the door trim. The sumptuous black hides retain their subtle beauty, with minimal signs of wear, such as on the driver-side bolster and door card. Likewise, the exterior paint finish is remarkably intact, with imperfections mostly confined to areas of expected high wear. Meanwhile, the smooth and potent 6.75-liter V-8 engine ensures driving pleasure that matches this exceptional Bentley’s beauty and luxury.
Inherently rare simply by virtue of wearing the coveted RT Turbo and Mulliner badges, this example is even more desirable for being the only one produced for 1999 and presents an exceptional opportunity for the Bentley enthusiast to own the absolute pinnacle of British performance and exclusivity of its era.
