The B36 was the basis of Chevron’s new open-top competition series of cars first introduced in 1976. The racer was built in modest quantities of approximately 21 cars up to 1978, and many of these were used in first-line racing action up to the late-1980s. Such was the limited construction run—contrasting with the popularity of the platform—that many more replica versions of the B36 remain and are actively involved in period racing, such as this 'Recreation' example offered for sale here.

Fiercely competitive on circuits from America to Japan during the 1970s, Chevron’s car epitomised the brilliance of the ground-effect era, employing a large rear wing and front splitter to keep the fibreglass-shelled monocoque glued to the track. Models were powered by an array of engines, from Cosworth to Mazda rotary powerplants. The B36 achieved overall victory at the 1977 Targa Florio, also winning at venues such as Suzuka, Fuji, and Vallelunga.

This 'Recreation' example was built to replicate the B36 used by the privateer team Societé ROC, a French outfit helmed by one-time Formula 2 driver, Fred Stalder. Perhaps most famously, at Le Mans in 1977, the ROC team campaigned their B36 with Michel Pignard, Albert Dufréne, and Jacques Henry finishing 6th overall and 1st in Class, placing 1st in the Index of Efficiency. By 1979 the B36 understandably began to be eclipsed by more advanced race cars and was disqualified at Le Mans that year for not covering sufficient distance.

This car has been fitted with a replacement racing tub while the replica is accompanied by its first tub as a spare, and is currently equipped with a period-correct Cosworth BDG four-cylinder engine. The car wears the period-correct Pierre du Nord sponsorship livery as used by the Societé ROC team. An ideal candidate for vintage racing, buyers are encouraged to check eligibility for historic racing events. Needless to say, even as a replica, this Chevron B36 'Recreation' would make a superlative addition to any sporting collection.
