Unveiled in March 2020, the McLaren 765 Long Tail—765LT for short—continued McLaren Automotives’ distinctive “Long Tail” styling, paying homage to the legendary F1 GTR of nearly two decades prior, with its extended rear bodywork designed to improve aerodynamics. A track focused version of the McLaren 720, the 765 coupe was built on a carbon-fiber “Monocage II”—McLaren’s term for a monocoque chassis—with an extruded aluminum subframe, revised aerodynamics, and a tuned version of the vaunted M840T engine. Borrowing numerous performance parts from the McLaren Senna, including a triple layered head gasket, high-capacity fuel pump, and forged aluminum pistons, engineers were able to push the mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 to an eyewatering 755 horsepower at 7,500 rpm.

Using the same enhanced engine as its closed-roof sibling, the 765LT Spider debuted in July 2021. Limited to just 765 examples, and unmistakable even from a glance, the 765LT Spider sports an inventive front splitter, dramatic side air intakes and a McLaren Senna-inspired front plinth. An LT-specific titanium exhaust unleashes the McLaren’s voice while a lightweight retractable hardtop lets the driver experience it unabated. As described by McLaren itself, this track-focused open supercar was designed for those who live a “life beyond the limits.”

McLaren 765LT Spider number 173, presented for sale here, certainly ranks among the most precious of these already exceptional automobiles. Sold new via McLaren of Philadelphia, this 765LT Spider left the Surrey, United Kingdom factory cloaked in the Bespoke color of Dragon Green, a stunning color-shifting shade with blue and purple undertones, depending on how the light hits it. Eye-catching McLaren Orange highlights on the carbon-fiber bodywork, including on the front splitter and the underside of the adaptive rear wing, coordinate perfectly with similarly colored elements on the extensively optioned black Alcantara interior. A copy of the original window sticker documents numerous McLaren Special Operations (MSO) Bespoke features, including exterior badging, interior trim, steering wheel, seat shells, rear wing, and unique orange dragon-crest embroidered headrests. Even the key fob shell received Bespoke treatment. Additional options include McLaren Orange brake calipers with black logo, extensive carbon-fiber exterior trim, an electrochromic roof finish, and both the Black and Stealth Pack. The consignor also notes the car has been fully wrapped in paint protection film to preserve its stunning MSO Bespoke finish. All told, this 765LT Spider was lavished with more than $105,000 in options for a final retail price of $498,004.

Currently displaying less than 600 miles, this as-new 765LT Spider would make a phenomenal addition to any sports-car collection, particularly for marque purists and supercar enthusiasts who covet exceptional specifications. Offering sonorous, open-top performance, visceral track potential, and one of the most sublime exterior designs penned in the modern era, this bespoke McLaren offers collectors an all-encompassing proposition quite outside the already exceptional scope of elite, production supercars.
