Introduced in 1969, the Mach 1 belongs to a wide range of performance-oriented Mustangs made available toward to the tail end of the model’s first generation. It featured a flat black hood with a central scoop, NASCAR-style hood pins, and optional front and rear spoilers. Additionally, the Mach 1 was offered exclusively in the fastback body style and came standard with a competition suspension and a deluxe interior with wood-grain trim. Four different engine displacements were offered, from the base 351 cubic-inch up to the 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet. The Mach 1 replaced the GT model and was so popular that the GT nameplate would not return to the lineup until 1982.

The example on offer was manufactured at the Metuchen New Jersey plant and completed in March 1969. As shown on the data plate on the door, this Mustang is equipped with the 351-4V V-8 engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a 3.00:1 rear gear ratio. The factory colors are listed as Candyapple Red over Red Corinthian vinyl, but the interior has since been reupholstered in black. The cabin is further equipped with high-back front seats, fold-down rear seats, an Indy T-handle shifter, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a Sparkomatic stereo cassette player. Front and rear spoilers along with rear window louvres provide the Mustang with a sporting appearance. The car rides on a set of aftermarket alloy wheels.

Originally destined for the Eastern Canadia, the car has been under the care of its Quebec-based owner since at least 2003. Invoices on file date back to this time and confirm various parts purchased for mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment. The most recent document, dated 2019, includes the purchase of a gas tank.

Stylish, fast, and well equipped, the Mach 1 occupies a sweet spot within the Mustang lineup. A well-cared-for example such as this will most certainly make a fine addition to any garage.
