998 cc, F-head V-Twin engine.

Bicycle racers Oscar Hedstrom and Oliver Hendee built the first Indian motorcycle in 1901 and their first V-twin in 1907. The first “Big Twin” was introduced in 1909, with a loop frame, and the company finished 1-2-3 at the 1911 Isle of Man TT. A leaf-sprung, swing-arm frame was developed in 1913, but the clock was running on the design, which would be replaced with the flathead Powerplus twin in 1915.

The 1915 Big Twin on offer marks the last Indian motorcycle to carry the original Hedstrom F-Head engine in a cradle-spring frame. Some purists regard this model as the last “real” Indian to emanate from the legendary Springfield, Massachusetts, “Wigwam.” This example is a very complete original with a patina much prized by collectors.
