Cleveland began by producing a lightweight 222-cubic centimeter two-stroke single in 1915, perhaps the most successful small two-stroke sold in the U.S. Its ambitions were much greater, and by the time the company failed in 1929, it was making a 996-cubic centimeter inline four-cylinder engine and competing with Excelsior-Henderson and Ace-Indian.
Cleveland started by buying L.E. Fowler’s four-cylinder design in 1925, but it was not a success, so they designed their own 737-cubic centimeter inline four. Bored out to 996 cubic centimeters, it became the well-regarded Tornado of 1929, with big valves and alloy pistons. The bike on offer has been beautifully restored by Jerry DeMille and Mike Parti. Cleveland Tornados seldom come to market, much less in this condition.
