The MG N-type Magnette models were built in small numbers from 1934 through 1936. They offered buyers more power and luxury than the company’s four-cylinder “Midgets” while still possessing the purist styling and sprightly driving dynamics for which MG was widely known. As a niche offering positioned between the Midgets and MG’s larger, soon-to-debut SA, these charming cars were never destined to sell in large numbers. It is believed that only 745 N-type Magnettes were produced in total, of which just 98 were NB Two-Seaters.
Power came from an updated version of the small-displacement, overhead-camshaft, inline, six-cylinder engine from the previous MG K-Type. A lengthy list of modifications and refinements brought output to a stated 56 horsepower, though the 1,271-cubic-centimeter, inline-six of the example offered here likely has a higher output as it features a period-correct supercharger in the vein of forced-induction racing MGs of the era.
Benefiting from a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration under current ownership, this NB Magnette Two-Seater is handsomely finished in a deep navy blue over matching leather upholstery with white piping that provides a pleasing contrast. The tidy interior features a Bluemels Brooklands steering wheel backed by a burled wood dashboard housing Jaeger instrumentation. Other noteworthy authentic details include faceted knobs for the four-speed manual transmission and choke levers, dual side mirrors and Brooklands racing windscreens, and a fold-up luggage rack aft of the rear-mounted spare tire.
This well-specified NB Magnette rides on Blockley Crossply tires mounted to chromed wire wheels with knock-off spinners, believed to have been installed in 2019. A period-style jack, a black soft-top and side curtains, and a convertible top boot are included in the sale.
