While modern automobile manufacturers seem to introduce new models or facelifts to existing models every few years, the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen looks almost exactly the same now (even following its most recent update) as it did when introduced. Sold under the Puch name in some markets, such as Austria, the ‘G’ was and still is considered the ultimate in luxury off-roading.
Within the ‘G’ community, there are some models which stand out. These include the 500 GE, which was the first G-Wagen sold with a V-8; 446 were produced between 1993 and 1994. The car offered here is the first of only three extant Puch G-Wagen, built in 1993, and the ‘VA’ in its VIN identifies the car as being built in Austria by Puch, rather than by Mercedes-Benz. This car was used by the Steyr Daimler Puch Fahrzeugtechnik for homologation, testing, and press drives and is featured in period brochures and magazines.
This 500 GE’s early history is confirmed by its original 1993 Austrian registration, data card, and an email from S-Tec. Delivered new in the highly attractive Amethystblau Metallic (DB3338) over a two-tone grey-and-black leather interior, it is equipped with side steps and bull bars. This car was loaded with a huge amount of standard equipment, such as electric and heated front seats, cruise control, an electric sunroof, and aluminium wheels. Offered now in partially restored condition, this 500 GE would make a perfect everyday driving car, particularly following its recent engine and transmission service. As the very first of its kind, this Puch 500 GE will surely remain highly collectable in the future.
