It was only natural, given the wild success of the 488 GTB berlinetta, Top Gear magazine’s 2015 Supercar of the Year, that Ferrari would introduce an open-top model. It used the same drivetrain, including the remarkable 660 bhp twin-turbocharged V-8, with, of course, the body modified with a folding hardtop. Thanks to careful design and engineering, the Spider weighed only 110 pounds more than its hardtop sibling, a highly impressive feat for an open car. It retained the equal 0–60 mph acceleration of 3.0 seconds, though an only slightly slower top speed of 202 mph. With all the character of previous normally aspirated Ferraris, including exquisite and nimble handling, the 488 quickly made a believer of anyone who doubted the turbochargers’ ability to deliver an enthralling driving experience.
Production of the 488 Spider has only recently concluded, so anyone seeking the opportunity to acquire a new example must look carefully—or acquire one, such as that offered here, that is in remarkable condition and, quite simply, the next best thing.
Benefitting from the same detailed care as the other automobiles in this collection, the 488 is finished in sparkling Blu Tour de France over Beige Tradizione leather, with color-coordinated seat belts, leather tunnel, steering wheel, and dash pad; the upholstery is stitched in contrasting Blu and features the iconic Cavallino stitched on the headrests of the Daytona-style seats. Additional options include the sporty Scuderia Ferrari fender shields and the yellow-painted brake calipers, both of which add a dash of flair to the stunning blue finish. The 488 appears in remarkable condition throughout, with virtually no signs of wear to the bodywork and an interior that appears as-new. This is to be expected, as at the time of cataloguing the car had recorded only 572 actual miles! It is accompanied by the complete original tool kit, including air-compressor bottle, as well as the Ferrari car cover with duffle bag.
Undoubtedly, this is among the most attractive and finest 488 Spiders available today and would make a wonderful companion to a classic Tour de France Ferrari in anyone’s collection. Ideally, one could take the toy out of the box, so to speak, and enjoy driving it at the speeds for which it was designed. A luxury convertible that can genuinely achieve over 200 mph.
