With a completely new G-Class always on the horizon, Mercedes-Benz has been sending out the original in style for several years now. This has notably featured outlandish special editions including remarkable six-wheel drive AMG creations, ever-more-luxurious takes such as the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet, and even a revised military G-Class—the latter prompting the automotive world to recall the Geländewagen’s utilitarian roots. Many more limited edition G-Wagens, however, have been tailored towards its more affluent and fashionable urban customers—no doubt attracted to this robust off-road model because of its enduring appeal among celebrity clientele.

One such machine was the 2018 G 65 AMG ‘Final Edition’. Taking the AMG G 65 as its base—already a mightily impressive machine—the Final Edition added custom bronze trim and new 21-inch wheels, as well as similar bespoke revisions to its interior. Mechanically however, it used the same 621 brake horsepower twin-turbocharged V-12 as the “normal” G65; the motor’s 737 pound-foot of torque could hardly be deemed inadequate. As expected, the Final Edition model commanded a substantial premium, claimed to be three times the price of an entry-level G350d.

This Final Edition was one of very few supplied new to the Middle East. It was delivered on 19 January 2018 in Obsidian Black (with scratch-resistant clear coat) over two-tone black anthracite leather. Custom stitching, common to all Final Editions, made the aforementioned hide all the more sumptuous. Its brown cross-stitched motif extends over the Napa hide-covered instrument cluster, front and rear seats, centre armrest and door cards.

Additional custom options found on this remarkable and rare limited edition G 65 are almost too numerous to list, but the abridged highlights—from its build sheet—includes; Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system with Region 2 DVD player, CarPlay smart-phone integration, stainless-steel package, park package, Chrome and Designo Exclusive packages (including Designo carbon trim) plus a host of other trim, tech and driver aids that make spending extended time in this top-flight AMG G-Class easily on a par with any contemporary luxury vehicle. At the time of cataloguing, the odometer read just 457 kilometres.
