After proving that it could compete with the likes of Ferrari’s 458 Italia and the Porsche GT and Turbo models with the MP4-12C, McLaren realized that to remain relevant against the supercar establishment, they would need to join the hypercar fray. Enter the P1.
Looking to build the ultimate driver’s platform utilizing a hybrid powertrain, McLaren started out with a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, tipping the scales at just 90 kg. Carbon fiber was further utilized for the car’s body panels to create the perfect harmony of weight savings and strength. McLaren’s fanatical attention to detail is in full effect with its weight-saving efforts. Even the interior carpet was deemed a luxury too weighty and was deleted entirely. Further, McLaren chose to leave the carbon fiber in the cockpit unlacquered, saving a further 1.5 kg. The windscreen glass was redesigned to be only 3.2 mm thick and reinforced with a thick plastic interlayer that allowed McLaren to save 3.5 kg over the windscreen in the MP4-12C. In total, the P1 barely tips the scales at a dry weight of just 1,395 kg.
Powering the P1 is the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 mated to an electric motor intended to fill the gaps in performance from a conventional gasoline engine. This gives the car a total output of 903 bhp (727 bhp from the V-8 and 176 bhp from the electric engine). Thanks to the car’s monstrous power output and unique aerodynamics, including adjustable front and rear wings providing as much as 600 kg of downforce at 160 mph, performance is nothing short of electrifying. Racing from 0–100 km/h takes just 2.8 seconds, leading to 200 km/h in 6.8 seconds, onwards to 300 km/h in 16.5 seconds (five full seconds faster than the McLaren F1). Keeping one’s foot on the accelerator will bring the P1 to a top speed of 217 mph. Even more impressive is the car’s average fuel consumption rating: 34 mpg.
Finished in Kilo Grey, this P1 features visible carbon fiber throughout its interior, including on the door mirrors, side panels, snorkel, front and rear bumpers, as well as the stealth pack, stealth badge set, and stealth-finished wheels over contrasting McLaren Orange brake calipers. The McLaren orange details continue throughout the interior and the P1 features McLaren Orange stitching on the steering wheel and seats. The remainder of the interior is trimmed in Carbon Black Alcantara.
Looking to make his P1 stand out from the rest, the owner specified his new P1 through McLaren’s Special Operations department, which allows for near-limitless possibilities to customize one’s new McLaren. This included the car’s special color of Kilo Grey, painting the upper surface of the rear wing while leaving the bottom in bare carbon fiber, painting a P1 logo on the engine cover in McLaren Orange, utilizing a satin lacquer on its rockers and tub inside the door sills, carbon fiber vent bezels, and instrument cluster in satin finish, P1 logos on the headrests in Orange, Bright Orange contrast stitching utilized on the seats and the steering wheel, and Frank Stephenson’s signature on the underside of the bonnet, also in Orange.
It was delivered new to the consignor through McLaren Philadelphia in 2015. Since then, the car has been preserved in virtually as-new condition, accumulating just under 350 miles since leaving the factory. In addition to its original manuals, battery charger, as well as service invoices from new, the car had its annual service in April 2017 at 191 miles.
Brilliantly optioned with a host of MSO special features, this is a virtually as-new P1 ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.
