Since the start of its collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, AMG has cultivated a well-earned reputation for producing some of the company’s most powerful and coveted models. Unveiled in 2008, the SL65 AMG Black Series garnered immediate acclaim, not only for its brutish styling and hair-raising performance, but as the most powerful roadgoing car AMG had ever built up to that point.
Topping an array of enhancements was an enhanced version of the standard SL65’s 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 engine featuring larger turbos, an expanded intercooler, and a remapped engine control unit, all of which increased power to an astounding 661 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. Road tests were predictably devastating, with Mercedes-Benz claiming 0–60 mph in 3.8 second and an electronically limited 199-mph top speed. Only 350 are understood to have been produced, with about half reportedly allocated to the United States.
Built in April 2009, this SL65 AMG Black Series was delivered new to Los Angeles finished as it is today in Black (040) over Black and Anthracite Exclusive Leather (531A). After acquiring it, the consignor treated the car to over $41,000 in enhancements by Mercedes-Benz performance gurus Renntech of Stuart, Florida.
Headlining the work is Renntech’s R3 Performance Package, which reportedly bumps output to over 800 horsepower and 1,000 pound-feet of torque through new turbochargers, upgraded engine and transmission control units, and a stainless-steel exhaust system. Meanwhile, a limited-slip differential helps tame the additional power. Renntech also tailored the car’s appearance by refinishing various body parts, moldings, and emblems in gloss black, installing a unique Alcantara and carbon-fiber steering wheel, and placing carbon-fiber trim throughout the cabin, including on the console, button surrounds, and paddle shifters. Brake calipers finished in yellow epoxy paint and a complete ceramic protective coating on the entire car round out the car’s upgrades.
Sporting a powertrain amplified by one of America’s most respected tuning companies, this exceptional SL65 AMG Black Series takes performance even beyond the already astounding standards set by Mercedes-Benz and AMG, making it thoroughly unique and all the more desirable.
