The brainchild of Bill Devin, an SCCA National Champion from California, Devin Enterprises created a number of kit cars in the 1950s and 1960s. Lightweight, affordable, and easy to construct, Devin’s fiberglass sports car quickly earned him a stellar reputation, and Devins could be found competing on racetracks across America.
The Devin D could be purchased either as a kit to be assembled by the customer or as a completed car for racing or street use. Boasting a tubular frame, the car was assembled mainly with Volkswagen parts and could be fitted with either a Porsche or VW engine. The cars arrived in a crate with a number of components, including a soft top, side curtains, upholstered bucket seats, a laminated safety glass windshield, brake, and fuel lines and more, all ready to be bolted on without any major bodywork welding, drilling, or significant modifications necessary. The finished product weighted under 1,200 pounds and could be had at a base price of $1,495 in “do-it-yourself” form. A top-shelf completed car with a 1,600-cubic centimeter engine cost upwards of $3,350.
While this particular Devin D’s history remains largely unknown, documentation on file notes that this particular car was once part of the estate of Bill Devin. The Devin was allegedly in the process of restoration by him and was never finished. When Mr. Devin acquired the car, the bodywork was found to be in poor condition, and a new body was built utilizing the original body molds and fitted to the car. It was sold from the Devin Estate to an individual in Italy in 2003, before it was acquired by its current owner in 2014.
Fitted with a Type 616/7, 1,600-cubic centimeter four-cylinder engine from a Porsche 356 B, the car presents quite well throughout. Still popular today in vintage racing, there is no doubt that this Devin D would be an absolute thrill to drive.
