Introduced at the New York Auto Show in 1954, the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was an instant hit with buyers who were in the market for a luxurious open-topped sports car. It was presented as a more affordable alternative to the legendary 300 SL, sharing similar design cues and engineering advancements. The 190 used more traditional unitary construction, as opposed to the 300 SL’s race car-like tubular frame, so could employ conventional doors.

Furthermore, the engine of the 190 SL was based on the 300 SL’s popular straight-six unit. It took the form of a 1.9-litre inline-four with identical bore and only slightly reduced stroke. Double-wishbone front suspension with coil springs and an anti-roll bar were allied to power-assisted drum brakes on all four corners. Though no match for its big brother, the 190 SL was nonetheless peppy, with a respectable top speed of 172 km/h.

A copy of the factory build sheet, which is available to view on file, records that this Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was delivered on 11 September 1959. Finished in Black over a Red leather interior, the car was optionally equipped with a desirable third seat mounted sideways behind the front two chairs, an extended steering column, and a Becker Mexico radio.

While the 190 SL’s complete history is not known, it has resided in Belgium as part of The Willy Michiels Collection since at least 2017. Presented today in its factory-correct colours and wearing a black soft top roof, the Mercedes-Benz notably retains its matching-numbers body and 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine—which is mated to a four-speed manual transmission.
