Adopting more Americanised styling cues, the “fintail” Mercedes-Benz 220 SE set a new standard for middle-class luxury motoring when it was introduced in 1959 as the replacement for its more curvaceous “ponton” predecessor. The convertible version of the W111 model line arrived the following year, with both the droptop and its coupé sibling shedding the distinctive rear fins as tastes continued to change.

Powered by a 2.2-litre straight-six engine and notably featuring Girling disc brakes on the front axle, the 220 SE Cabriolet was only on sale for four years. In that time, just 2,279 cars were completed.

The example presented here, chassis number 111.023.12.033653, is documented by a copy of its factory data card. Dated for 6 September 1962, it records that the car retains its matching-numbers bodywork and 2.2-litre straight-six engine, which is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. Presented in an all-black colour scheme, extending to the convertible roof, wheel centres, and interior upholstery, this 220 SE is accompanied by a spare wheel and tonneau cover.

Fitted with a Becker Mexico TR radio and offered as part of The Willy Michels Collection in Belgium, it displayed 28,263 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloguing.
