Both introduced in 1951, the Mercedes-Benz 220 and 300 series marked the first time that the Stuttgart firm had adopted a straight-six engine in the post-war period. The 220 model would remain in production through to 1955, available in four different body styles. Alongside a traditional saloon and svelte coupé offering, approximately 2,275 convertible examples were built. Offered here is an example of the four-seater Cabriolet B variant, featuring two additional side windows for rear passengers; a mere 997 units were reportedly completed.

Although a comprehensive history for chassis number 187.013.0927452 is not fully known, when the 220 Cabriolet was previously sold by Holland Classic Cars it was claimed that the Mercedes-Benz was delivered new in the Netherlands in 1953. It was owned by Jules Jacob Adriaan Schagen van Leeuwen—the South Africa-born Dutch naval Lieutenant Commander, who later worked for the country’s Ministry of Defence, developed anti-aircraft weapons and munitions—until his death in 1976.

Having most recently resided alongside other prominent Mercedes-Benzes as part of The Willy Michiels Collection in Belgium, this 220 Cabriolet B presents in black with a matching black convertible roof. Meanwhile, the tan leather interior is fitted with wood trim and a Telefunken radio.
