As the 1930s progressed, the Mercedes-Benz model range exploded into a wide range of vehicles from economical sedans to full-blown racecars in order to meet the needs of the increasingly mobile German public. The 290 (better known as the code W18 chassis) was introduced in 1933 as an executive-level car powered by a 2.9-liter inline six-cylinder engine with 14 available body styles atop either short- or long-wheelbase frames. Manufactured to the robust standards which have made the firm beloved by enthusiasts, the 290 additionally offered its passengers increased comfort and roadholding capabilities thanks to an innovative suspension which utilized individually coil-sprung swing axles in the rear and two parallel wishbones at the front.
The 1936 Mercedes-Benz 290 Sedan on offer was sold to Porche Foreign Auto Wrecking in August 1985 via Rick Cole Auctions. Significantly, a note at the bottom of the sales invoices reveals that this car was believed to have been originally delivered to influential and controversial filmmaker D.W. Griffith. Several decades later, the 290 Sedan gained an additional Hollywood connection when it appeared in a season three episode of Hogan’s Heroes. During its appearance, the car can be seen with a set of license plates bearing “DXR 499,” and today, one of those plates remains attached to the rear bumper.
Beyond its noteworthy entertainment industry connections, the Mercedes-Benz presents as a potential restoration candidate thanks to a largely complete interior and an inline six-cylinder engine present under the hood.
Now offered after nearly four decades hidden from sight, and certainly a noteworthy automobile in several categories, this Mercedes-Benz 290 Sedan would make for a significant addition to any collection.
