The Alfa Romeo Alfetta—translated literally as “little Alfa Romeo”—launched in 1972 as a sedan. The platform was adapted for the introduction of the Alfetta GT in 1974, which took a two-door, four-seat, fastback coupe shape. Italdesign’s Giorgetto Giugiaro oversaw the design, which has aged incredibly well. The coupe shares certain exterior details with the concurrent Alfa Romeo Montreal, including its hood line and door shape.

The Alfa Romeo offered here was designed and built from the ground up in 2001 by Preben Kristensen as a dedicated SCCA GT5 racecar with a Trans-Am-style tube frame and silhouette bodywork patterned after an Alfa Romeo GTV. While the vehicle shares little in common with its roadgoing counterpart, molds—included in the sale—were taken from the body of a 1979 Alfetta GTV 2.0, also offered in this collection, to accurately replicate the lines and proportions of the production Alfa Romeo. Up front is a double wishbone suspension, large disc brakes, and a high-capacity cooling system. The 2.0-liter fuel-injected inline four-cylinder produces roughly 200 horsepower and has zero runtime, according to the consignor.

Invoices and correspondence on file from 1998 to 2000 outline thousands of dollars spent preparing the vehicle for the racetrack. It was campaigned in SCCA events at some of the great circuits of North America, including Mid-Ohio, Mosport, Nelson Ledges, Watkins Glen, Road America, and Summit Point. A collection of period photographs show the vehicle in action.

Now roughly 20 years removed from its racing heyday, this Alfa Romeo is a prime candidate to rehabilitate for competition. With a bespoke chassis, tuned engine, and lightweight bodywork—replete with accompanying molds—this silhouette GTV will make for a thrilling competitor in historic racing events once recommissioned.
