At the 1967 Montreal Exposition, Alfa Romeo showcased two identical prototypes that would ultimately evolve into the revered Montreal. The masterful design by visionary Marcello Gandini of Carrozzeria Bertone embodied the bold, avant-garde spirit that had made the talented designer’s Lamborghini Miura a sensation. The influence of the Miura is evident in the Montreal’s wide, low stance, with its shark-like nose flowing effortlessly into sculpted fenders and gracefully pronounced haunches culminating in a sleek, truncated tail. Its radical headlight “blinds” and stacked horizontal vents on the C-pillars imbue a distinctly futuristic and aerodynamic appeal.

Strong customer interest following the expo prompted Alfa Romeo to develop a production version, with the company’s engineers elevating the execution by incorporating a V-8 borrowed from the firm’s Tipo 33 prototype racecar. This advanced engine, featuring aluminum alloy construction, dual overhead camshafts, and dry-sump lubrication, delivered unprecedented performance for a production Alfa Romeo, enabling top speeds approaching 140 mph. Despite its appealing design and potent performance, the Montreal was produced in limited numbers due to the 1970s oil crisis, with just 3,925 built from 1970 to 1977.

While emissions requirements prevented the Montreal from officially being offered in the United States, the model’s striking design and advanced engineering earned it an enthusiastic global following with examples ultimately finding their way stateside. This 1975 Alfa Romeo Montreal was imported from the Netherlands to the United States by the consignor and federalized in 1985. Presented in period-correct dark green over a black cloth interior, it rides on the model’s distinctive turbine-style alloy wheels and is equipped with power windows and a wood-rimmed steering wheel.
