Much like its Sebring stablemate, the Indy was named after one of Maserati’s many great motorsport triumphs. Specifically, Wilbur Shaw’s back-to-back wins in the Indianapolis 500 aboard an 8CTF. Debuted at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show, the four-seater Indy featured a Vignale design built on a unibody structure and launched with a 4,136-cc V-8 featuring double overhead camshafts to produce 260 horsepower.
From the 436 early production examples factory-equipped with a 4.2-litre engine, chassis number AM116 958 offered here holds a 6 March 1971 date of production. Data supplied by Maserati confirms that the car was originally finished in Bianco Polo over a Senape tan leather interior, ahead of being delivered new to Italian capital city Milan.
The Indy now presents as a project car in need of a complete restoration. Finished in its factory-correct colour and equipped with a five-speed manual transmission, it has most recently resided as part of a collection of 1960s and 1970s Maseratis in Austria.
One completed, this Indy could make for a brilliant entry into classic car rallies on account of its cossetting interior and brawny powerplant.
