A letter from Mercedes-Benz Classic, which is available to view on file, confirms that chassis number 169804 was delivered new in Stuttgart on 21 March 1939. Following its initial road registration four months later in July, a full ownership timeline for the 230 Cabriolet D is not presently known. The vendor advises that they bought the car in 2020, when it was partway through a restoration that started in 2016. He then commissioned the remainder of the rebuild.
The 2.2-litre inline-four motor was overhauled in September 2020 by engine specialist Michael Plass Motoreninstandsetzung in Plauen; the invoices total €12,378. The transformation was then hand over to classic vehicle expert Mario Schrank of Die Oldtimermanufaktur in Kaltennordheim-Fischbach. Through to April 2021, a new exhaust system was fitted while the electrics, brakes, and suspension were renewed. The car was refinished in its present two-tone green colour combination, a new convertible roof fitted, and the interior trimmed in dark green for a final cost of €41,017.
Accompanied by a two-piece luggage set for the boot, this exceptionally well-turned-out 230 Cabriolet D is ready to charm its next discerning owner.
