Immensely popular though it was, MG’s MGA faced stiff performance competition from its larger-engined contemporaries. To remedy the situation, the firm introduced the Twin-Cam in 1958. Sporting a high-compression aluminum cylinder head with dual-overhead camshafts, along with four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes and pin drive, racing-style steel wheels, the new high-performance MGA was good for 108 horsepower at nearly 7,000 rpm and could comfortably exceed 110 mph. Racing success soon followed, with class wins at Sebring and Le Mans helping cement the Twin-Cam’s performance legacy.
The 1960 MGA Twin-Cam Roadster offered here is a desirable late-production example benefiting from an exhaustive restoration by marque experts. Per the car’s British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, it was completed 22 June 1959 finished, as it is today, in Old English White over Red Trim.
Beginning in 2021, the car was treated to a comprehensive, three-year restoration which was completed in June 2024. Its high-performance engine was reportedly initially rebuilt by Twin-Cam specialist Rick Bennett of Chardon, Ohio, before being reexamined and reassembled by Jim Steck of AutoComponenti in Brookville, Ohio. Particular attention is said to have been directed towards flex mounting the carburetors and making float bowl modifications to ensure avoidance of the fuel starvation problems characteristic of stock Twin-Cams. Restoration of the body and chassis commenced prior to the consignor’s acquisition and was completed under the direction of Tom Vail’s All Ferrari Parts Inc. Reams of invoices document the extensive restoration process, including a refinishing in the car’s factory Old English White over Red livery.
Benefitting from a thorough sorting by marque aficionados, this Twin-Cam Roadster will make an exceptional entrant to any number of concours lawns and vintage rallies.
