Porsche launched its 356 B Roadster for the 1960 model year as a successor to the one-year-only Convertible D. Like the D, the new Roadster offered Drauz bodywork, wind-up windows and a taller removable windshield. The 356 B also reflected Porsche’s continuing effort to improve the line’s mechanical components, with stronger engine internals, transaxle, and shifting linkage, as well as better Alfin brakes. The body also displayed subtle styling changes, with a flatter hood, reshaped front fenders, and a larger chrome-plated hood handle.
This striking 356 B 1600 “Normal” Drauz Roadster was completed at Zuffenhausen on 14 July 1960 and finished in Ruby Red over a Light Brown interior. Factory specifications listed on an accompanying copy of its original Kardex include Continental tires. Additionally, the document notes it was originally delivered to a resident of California.
A proper and professional restoration by Porsche specialists began around 2013, with a bare-metal repaint in the correct Ruby Red, which for good reason was among the most popular of all 356 colors. It is matched by a Light Brown interior, which spans the seats and headrests, and tan and black coco floor mats, which add a whimsical and period-correct accent to the car. A Blaupunkt AM/FM radio is found in the 356’s optional underdash shroud. Drivers will appreciate gripping the wood-rimmed steering wheel, as well as the usability of the fog lamps and a driver’s side outside mirror. This interior is matched by the soft top and boot, completing the car’s touring appeal. It is substantially dressed up with a set of reproduction knockoff wheels.
As offered today, this exceedingly desirable 356 B Drauz Roadster is powered by its numbers-matching 1.6-liter engine as listed on its Kardex copy. The 1960 models were a landmark in the history of the 356 Porsche, and for many, the combination of a new face with hints of the past makes this the perfect 356.
