This car is one of only 355 two-seat 1961 Austin-Healey Mark IIs and also one of the final 3.0-liter two-seaters ever built, second only to the 100S in terms of production numbers. Their flawless Gerry Coker body design is without doubt the most attractive of these treasured British classics, and such features as their triple-carb, 132 hp ‘six’ and front disc brakes provide performance far above both the earlier cars and the later BJ8.
This example is one of only 132 exported to the USA in 1961 and benefits from a total nut-and-bolt, body-off-frame restoration by marque specialists Tom and Randee Rocke of Riverside, California’s Healey Lane. The body and chassis were given a bare-metal refinish, with the exterior sporting two-stage DuPont Gun Metal Gray over Colorado Red. A complete new interior was installed, with red-piped red seat upholstery and matching wool carpets, plus a panel kit, a new trunk kit, new side curtains, a black soft top and a black tonneau cover.
All-new parts were used to rebuild the engine, center-shift gearbox, overdrive and ancillary systems. The exhaust is a new, jet-coated steel system. An all-new cloth wiring harness and new or rebuilt electrical components were installed. A completely new fuel system was installed, including a new tank and lines, and the triple SU HS4 carburetors were rebuilt. All-new brake lines, front disc brakes, jet-coated rear brake drums and a new master cylinder were installed as well. All interior and exterior brightwork was triple-plated for a lasting shine. A new front and rear suspension, chrome Dunlop 60-spoke wire wheels and 185 x 15 Roadspeed tires round out the package.
Once completed, limited test mileage was covered to ensure proper sorting and performance. As such, the car is fresh and ready for the next owner to enjoy and show. No expense was spared, and most of the parts used in the restoration were purchased new from England. This photo-documented restoration is accompanied by a British Motor Heritage Industry Trust certificate and is verified by Bill Bolton of the Tri-Carb Registry.
